BOULDER CITY – Downtown Boulder City is often described as “quaint” and “historic.” These elements keep people coming back to visit businesses that are charming and successful. Unfortunately, with older properties, there is older infrastructure. Several potential business owners have expressed concerns about the existing electrical infrastructure in the downtown area. That will change soon, thanks to a large-scale project getting underway this month.
The Nevada Way 12kV Extension project is scheduled to start next week. Crews will start updating the electrical system along Nevada Way, from Elm Street to 5th Street, as part of an effort to provide greater efficiency. Starting early February, the work taking place on Nevada Way will, at times, detour traffic between Elm and 5th Street (see map). These intermittent detours will continue for several months.
Funding source for this project is from the Boulder City Redevelopment Fund, or RDA. “The RDA was established to help facilitate commercial reinvestment in the RDA area,” said Acting City Manager Michael Mays. “This electrical upgrade project will make vacant and older properties more attractive for redevelopment, without impacting property taxes for residents.”
The project is scheduled from February 3 through June 6, 2025, and should have no impact on major events coming to Boulder City this spring. While most of the work will be taking place on the sidewalk, the road will be needed for the use of large equipment. Traffic control will be set up to push traffic to the center of roadway on the affected side of the road. All pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the other side of the road while being mindful of keeping ADA access in place and unobstructed.
Acme Underground Inc. was awarded work including trenching and installation of conduits, underground vaults, and concrete pads with a bid of $821,817.00. After this work is complete, the City of Boulder City Electric Division will install the electrical equipment. The entire project is slated to cost $1,438,616.00.
